Amazon and Bookstores are Flooded With Misleading Books About Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Buying Reputable Essential Oil Books

It's common for book publishers to automatically send me books or offer to send me books in the hopes that I'll include a review within AromaWeb's Book Review area.

For example, a publicist for a book publisher recently sent me a particular "essential oil" book. It took me all of five minutes to spot glaring errors and see that there was no reference to the author's educational background or length of experience in working with essential oils. I didn't even need to get beyond page 3 to see that she made mistaken claims about what the term therapeutic grade means. The author went on to make the broad claim that essential oils are directly evaluated by the FDA before they are allowed to go to market. That's just not true.

There are many more problematic books about essential oils on the market then there are reliable books. I don't bother including reviews of problematic books within AromaWeb's Book Review area because I want AromaWeb to feature only books that offer valuable information to readers and students.

The situation with the market being flooded with misleading and unhelpful essential oil books is getting worse. The increasing ability and ease for individuals to self publish has so many advantages, but the drawback is it also makes it easy for unqualified individuals to spread inaccurate information.

Even for books that go through a more traditional publishing process, it's clear that not all publishers do much to doublecheck the accuracy of an author's submitted work.

A problem with relying on books written by inexperienced authors is that the information can be untrue, misleading or unsafe. You are also much more likely to get ineffective results or miss out on important information that can make your use of essential oils much more rewarding and beneficial in your lifestyle.

Relying on the number of Amazon book reviews or overall rating for a book can also be misleading. The problematic book that I mentioned in my example above had over 70 reviews on Amazon, with most of those consisting of five-star ratings.

How to Buy Reliable Books About Essential Oils and Aromatherapy

Above, I highlight the growing problem with misleading books flooding the market. However, I also want to emphasize and reassure you that there are a lot of extraordinarily helpful, invaluable essential oil books written by authors and educators that have extensive knowledge and experience working with essential oils. I would not be where I am today in my essential oil journey without access to these remarkable resources.

I wrote a guide for AromaWeb entitled What to Look for When Shopping for Essential Oil Books. If you haven't already, I encourage you to read it. Within it, I share a lot of helpful tips for selecting books.

Aromatherapy for Pets and Animals

Aromatherapy for PetsIt is important to recognize that animals are much different than humans. Like veterinary medicine, animal aromatherapy can and should be considered its own field... cats, dogs, birds, horses and other pets differ extensively. The same essential oils and blends that we use on ourselves are not always safe to use on our pets. Cats, for instance, are especially sensitive to essential oils. Many essential oils, most particularly tea tree, are said to be quite toxic to cats.

Holistic Aromatherapy for AnimalsIn 2002, Kristen Leigh Bell published the text Holistic Aromatherapy for Animals. Kristen Leigh Bell is the most recognized expert in the safe utilization of aromatherapy with animals, and her book is the resource that I have the most confidence in when researching safe practices for animals. Book Review: The Sacred Art of Anointing by Allison Stillman

The Sacred Art of AnointingAdded to AromaWeb's Book Shelf section is a review of the book The Sacred Art of Anointing by Allison Stillman.

Many may find that The Sacred Art of Anointing makes an enlightening secondary book on utilizing essential oils within spiritual applications, including anointing ceremonies and chakra work. I can sense that Stillman is eager to share the blessings and enlightenment that she has received over the course or her time in working with essential oils for anointing, and that energy resonates within the pages. I certainly mirror a number of her experiences/observations including Frankincense's use within meditation and its ability to enhance spiritual consciousness. The book, however, is rather disorganized in how the content is presented, and there is no index. I elaborate on these concerns within the full review.

Amazon.com Associate of the Month

Out of 1 million associates, AromaWeb was selected as the Amazon.com Associate of the Month for July, 2001.

I would love to see a revised edition of The Sacred Art of Anointing put into print. With some edits and better organization, this book could prove to be a much more useful and more often referenced guide to the use of essential oils for anointing, meditation, prayer and other spiritual applications.

Organic Body Care Recipes by Stephanie Tourles

Organic Body Care RecipesFor the beginning to intermediate body care product crafter, Organic Body Care Recipes is a must-have for your personal library. This 378-page book includes valuable introductory information, relevant facts and tips, an ingredient dictionary, and as the book title implies, a large selection of recipes.

Unlike many recipe books that I tend to come across, Organic Body Care Recipes includes a bit more complementary information, application tips, packaging recommendations and ideas for customizing your own recipes.

Amazon.com Associate of the Month

Out of 1 million associates, AromaWeb was selected as the Amazon.com Associate of the Month for July, 2001.

The word organic is an adjective that loosely means living matter. It is likely that the use of the word organic in the book's title may confuse some consumers who may think that the book requires the use of certified organic ingredients. Crafters can use conventional (not organic) natural ingredients and do not have to stick with using strictly organic ingredients.

Organic Body Care Recipes is not an aromatherapy-specific book, but it emphasizes all-natural or nearly all-natural recipes and includes recipes that do fit within the definition of holistic aromatherapy.

For beginners, the Ingredient Dictionary portion of the book is worth the cost of the book alone.
